Physical Therapy Philosophy & Mission
The Associate of Science Physical Therapist Assistant Program (ASPTA) was developed in order to assist
individuals with the desire and academic ability to serve persons in need of rehabilitation services, in the role
of Certified Physical Therapist Assistant. By serving individuals with this need in various settings in the
community, graduates of the Ivy Tech Northwest ASPTA Program will also be serving the larger community
of Northwest Indiana through provision of rehabilitation services. The Program also serves the community
through providing the opportunity to pursue the gainful and useful career of physical therapist assistant to
individuals in the community with the talent and inclination, regardless of race, gender, religion, national
origin, sexual orientation, marital status, age, physical or mental disability, or veteran status.
Physical Therapy Program Goals
The program goal, an extension of the College mission, is to provide students with a quality education,
which enables them to be competent physical therapist assistants throughout their careers. The goals are as
follows:
- Graduate competent students into the community who have adopted professional behaviors representative of a physical therapist assistant.
- Assist students in employment placement before and following graduation.
- Maintain licensure exam results of graduates, which equal or exceed the national standards.
- Provide academic and clinical settings, which stimulate student learning.
- Update, revise or modify curriculum as identified by students, faculty, College administrators, community and PT/PTA professionals.
- Maintain state of the art equipment and laboratory facilities.
- Exemplify and demonstrate the importance of professional membership in the American Physical Therapy Association.
- Ensure that equal educational opportunities are available for all students regardless of race, color, creed, national origin, sexual orientation, age, disability or marital status.
- Organize and maintain an advisory committee, which consists of persons actively engaged in or supports the practice of physical therapy.
