After Registering
Follow this timeline in order to make your Distance Education experience successful
| 4-6 weeks prior to beginning of semester | Begin ordering your textbooks. You can order online at http://www2.specialty-books.com/ivytech or you can call the Gary Ivy Tech Campus Bookstore 219-981-4409 or 1-888-IVY-LINE |
| 1-2 weeks prior to beginning of semester | Begin locating other materials needed for your course (Software, hardware or other course specific items) |
| Day semester begins | Email your instructor to introduce yourself as a student in the class. Because many courses have assignments due the first week, you should check your course assignment sheet as soon as possible to get started in the class. NOTE: if you email your instructor prior to the scheduled first day of classes, DO NOT expect a response until classes begin. |
Your Email Provides
By emailing the instructor, you will provide your instructor with:
- Your e-mail address directly to your instructor. This assures the start-up of smooth and regular communication between you and your instructor. It also minimizes problems from paperwork processing delays.
- Attendance in the class. Like walking into a traditional classroom, lets your instructor know you are present in the electronic classroom and ready to begin the class.
- An open line of communication. If you have more than one e-mail address, tell your instructor which address you prefer to use for the course and which is available as an alternative.
- NOTE: If you have not contacted your instructor by the end of the second week of class, your instructor will drop you from the class as a no-show withdrawal.
Getting your Instructor's Email Address
Check the Distance Education course web site. The course syllabus and assignment page, which includes the instructor's e-mail address is also posted on the web site. If the instructor's e-mail address is not posted on the web site by the end of regular registration week, call the Distance Education Department.
Course Web Sites
The course websites include the following:
- The syllabus, your instructor's name, e-mail address, phone number, office location, text and software requirements and possibly blackboard information.
- The assignment sheet, a list of assignments and due dates for the semester.
Obtaining Your Books
You can order books online for distance learning courses by visiting
the Distance Learning Bookstore in Terra Huate on the web at
http://bookstore.ivytech.edu,
or call 1(866)714-0002.
Other Pertinent Information
If your course requires specialized software, you may often be able to purchase or order the software through the Ivy Tech bookstore and may be eligible for an educational discount. You may also purchase software through any software vendor. When ordering or purchasing software, make sure you know the exact name and version needed. If you have any questions about software, contact your instructor.
Student ID card
All registered Ivy Tech Community College students are required to have a student ID card. Even if you plan to do all your Distance Education course work from home and have no other class on campus, a situation may arise in which you will need to use on-campus resources, such as the library or a computer lab. In order to access on-campus resources, you are required to show your student ID card.
The Learning Resource Center (LRC/Library)
Each campus provides Student ID cards at no charge for your first ID card. A fee is charged if the card must be replaced. Call your nearest campus to find out LRC/Library hours of operation.
