During the Course
Testing
- Quizzes and Tests
As with traditional classes, students in Distance Education classes are usually required to take quizzes and/or tests during the course of their class. Quizzes and tests are handled in one or more of the following ways.
- Take-home exams.
A quiz or test may be given much like a take-home exam in a traditional class. The instructor will make the exam available to students either as an e-mail attachment or by posting it on the web page. Students will download, do, and return the exam by the due date assigned by the instructor.
- On-line testing.
The instructor may use a testing program developed specifically for Distance Education students. These exams consist of true-false and/or multiple choice questions. The amount of time students take on the exam is measured by the computer and may be limited. Both student and instructor receive immediate feedback on the results.
- On-campus testing.
Some instructors require their Distance Education students to take their exams on campus. If students are required to take on-campus exams, the instructor will make every effort to make the exam available at all campuses and at a variety of times to make exam-taking as convenient as possible for all Internet students.
The instructor will inform students of the method and due dates for exams either in the syllabus or by e-mail during the course of the semester. Any questions or confusion about method, due dates, etc. should be directed to the instructor.
Dropping/Adding a Course
Sometimes students discover that a traditional class is better suited to their needs than an Internet class. Because most Distance Education classes are also offered as a traditional class, there is a possibility that you can transfer from the Distance Education class to the traditional class.
Doing this depends on:
- Whether there is a traditional class available (occasionally classes are offered only over the Internet)
- Whether the traditional class is at a time and place convenient for you
- Whether you have kept up with assignments well enough to make a smooth transition to a traditional class and whether the instructor of the traditional class both has room in the class and is willing to accept a new student.
- If you are able to transfer to a traditional class (none of the above factors prohibits you from doing so), you will need to:
- Talk to your Distance Education instructor.
- Talk to the instructor of the traditional class. You can get his/her name and phone number from your academic advisor.
- Complete and process a Change of Enrollment form. This will require your coming to campus and seeing an advisor.
Drop the Class
If you cannot continue in the Distance Education class for any reason or transferring to a traditional class is not an option, you will need to formally withdraw from the class. To do so, you must see an advisor to complete and process a Change of Enrollment form. If you do not complete your course work, transfer to a traditional class or process the Change of Enrollment form, your name will appear on the instructor's grade roster at the end of the semester as being currently enrolled in the course. Your instructor would have no choice but to assign a failing grade.
Getting your Grades
Most instructors will give feedback concerning grades as the semester progresses. Some will send updates after tests or project and other may post grades after each assignment in blackboard. Please check with your instructor as to how they will handle grade reporting during the semester.
Additionally, instructors are required to submit their final grades for a class by the end of final exam week (the last week of the semester). The Registrar no longer mails a grade report to students after the semester ends. To get your final grades for the semester, go to CAMPUS CONNECT and login using your username and password.
