IVY TECH MORTUARY SCIENCE CLUB HOSTS HALLOWEEN PARTY AT COMMUNITY CENTER
(East Chicago, IN) On Friday, October 28, the Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana mortuary science club hosted a Halloween Party for 40 children at the Bessie Owen’s Center in East Chicago, Indiana. The Center, named in honor of local retired school teacher Bessie E. Daniels-Owens, was dedicated in 1973. Ms. Daniels-Owens was an influential educator who contributed to her community. “Ms. Daniels-Owens retired from the East Chicago School District after 50 years of service,” said Nanetta Williams, the Center’s administrative assistant.
Flyers, created by the Club, were given to the parents of the children who attend the center’s after school program. “We wanted to make sure all the students ranging from ages three to twelve arrived in costume to join in the festivities,” adds mortuary science club treasurer John Phillips. The children arrived to the Halloween party dressed as cheerleaders, Count Dracula, monsters, and ninjas to name just a few. The Center incorporates tutoring, reading and arts and crafts. “We understand children take part in field trips to Chicago’s Navy Pier as part of their stay at the Center. Our party is an extension of the social outing the children are exposed to during this fall holiday season,” said club president Ryan Parker.
The Club raised funds for the party and supplied pizza and drinks for the children as well. After the snack, children lined up to break the piñata where everyone was able to leave the party with enough candy. “We had a great time with the children. We hope to make this happen for the Center again next year,” states club vice-president Nicole Chelbana
