IVY TECH REGIONS JOIN INDIANA CAMPUS COMPACT
In May, Ivy Tech Community College, the second-largest post-secondary institution in Indiana, announced that 10 of its Indiana regions would officially become members of Indiana Campus Compact (ICC), an organization that promotes service-learning curricula and civic-engagement activities in higher education. Effective July 1, three more of Ivy Tech’s regions will join ICC. These regions include:
  • Northwest – Gary, Valparaiso, East Chicago and Michigan City
  • East Central – Muncie, Anderson, and Marion
  • Wabash Valley – Terre Haute

Prior to Ivy Tech joining the organization, ICC served 202,182 full-time equivalent students on 32 member campuses. The inclusion of 13 Ivy Tech regions across the state significantly increases the number students that ICC serves.

Recently, college campuses nationwide have begun to focus on service learning. The concept of service learning is simple: it is a way for students to learn though community service and civic engagement. Through service-learning curricula, colleges foster civic responsibility, help make coursework more memorable through real-world application, and build the relationship between the college and the community.

Ivy Tech Community College fuels Indiana’s workforce and economic development by offering affordable degree programs, technical certificates and certifications that align with employer needs and credits that transfer to other Indiana colleges and universities.. Ivy Tech Community College is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

Through ICC’s partnership with Ivy Tech, both curricular and co-curricular (outside the classroom) service-learning and civic-engagement activities will become more commonplace, giving students more opportunities to learn leadership skills, decision-making skills, and civic responsibility.
