DESERVING IVY TECH CULINARY STUDENT WINS SPECIAL AWARD
Just two days before her birthday, 49-year old Lisa Jackson-Austin received an early gift when she was awarded a $500 scholarship on behalf of the American Culinary Federation.
After a routine visit to her instructor’s office, Austin noticed the posting on the office bulletin board. “There are frequent postings of scholarship opportunities. When this one came along I figured I’d give it a try, but never thought I’d be worthy enough to win” said Austin.

“More than deserving”, however, were the words used by Ivy Tech culinary chair, Chef Elida Abeyta to describe Austin. In addition to being a model student, and gifted cook, Austin is said to be an inspiration to her instructors and classmates alike. “She’s very nurturing. I’ve seen her give clothes away to her fellow students, bring in plants to decorate the classroom and even brings in samples to show the staff... She’s an angel” says Abeyta.
In addition to running her own catering business from home, Austin also finds time to volunteer for Meals on wheels, school sponsored-dinners and hospice services. Austin says it makes her feel good to volunteer her time to help someone else.
Austin credits her mother for her love of cooking. She says watching her mother prepare loving meals for all eight of her siblings made her want to cook. “Cooking brings people together. I enrolled in this program because I love seeing how quickly and beautifully food can be prepared”.
Austin’s catering service, Darshon’s specializes in pastries and southern cuisine. She is expected to graduate from Ivy Tech’s culinary program in May, 2007.
