IVY TECH COMMUNITY COLLEGE OF INDIANA UNVEILS STRATEGIC PLAN 2010: “FROM SUCCESS TO THE BEST”
Excitement filled the air last Tuesday as community leaders joined faculty, students and staff of Ivy Tech in unveiling the Strategic Plan of Ivy Tech Community College. As a statewide, open-access college, the mission of Ivy Tech Community College is to provide residents of Indiana with professional, technical, transfer and lifelong education for successful careers, personal development, and citizenship. Through its affordable, quality educational programs and services, the College strengthens Indiana’s economy and enhances its cultural development.
“Changing Lives” is the new theme of Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana. It is an appropriate theme because for whatever form you have known Ivy Tech as it has changed through the years --vocational school, state college and now community college-- it has continually changed the lives of individuals throughout the state and Northwest Indiana for the past 40 years.
Now it seems that the College is going through another change. To say we have a new mandate, a new vision and a new mission is no overstatement. Ivy Tech has matured from a limited-mission vocational institution to become the state’s first and only comprehensive community college. Statewide, Ivy Tech is taking a more comprehensive role in the state government’s reinvigorated efforts to create jobs and expand workforce development. The governor’s office and the General Assembly have singled out Ivy Tech to be the primary instrument for workforce development.
Responsible for the development of Ivy Tech’s strategy and programming in workforce development, is Executive Vice President Dr. Carol D’Amico. D’Amico, on hand to facilitate last week’s unveiling of the new strategy, is a recognized expert on education and workforce development issues. Co-author of the nationally recognized Workforce 2020, D’Amico has extensive experience in advising corporate and government leaders on strategies to strengthen America’s economy through a qualified educated workforce.
So, what can students expect from the “New” Ivy Tech?
Students can expect Ivy Tech to bring new and expanded educational programs to Indiana’s communities by expanding programs in existing high-need, high-demand workforce areas and ensuring that all associate degree programs allow students to continue on to baccalaureate level.
Students will also see more quality degree programs that are consistent with national standards and the standards of the universities to which credits will transfer. Remedial coursework will also be offered in a variety of forms that will effectively and quickly move people into college-level work.
Existing programs will be revised, with a focus on improving instructional quality, strengthening workplace relevance and eliminating outmoded programming. There will also be a greater emphasis on increasing certification programs that lead to immediate employment and long-term career growth, and increased, customized, employer-driven training.
