Ivy Tech Community College has been awarded a $1.6 million grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. for the development of accelerated and targeted remedial education.
“We are honored by the investment that Lilly Endowment has made in Ivy Tech Community College. Our mission as the state’s community college is to raise the educational attainment level of Hoosiers. The development of accelerated and targeted remedial education is an important and often overlooked aspect in allowing students to quickly and effectively receive the education and training that they need to be successful in the ever-changing and more-demanding workplace. We plan to be a leader in providing such education,” said Ivy Tech Executive Vice President Carol D’Amico.
Ivy Tech Community College has always had success in assisting adults of all ages in getting prepared for college program-level courses by taking refresher classes to update their skills in math, reading and writing. The $1.6 million grant from the Endowment will allow the college to transform how that is done in Indiana and also to serve as a national model.
The college plans to develop state of the art techniques on how instruction is delivered including on site of delivery at the workplace of the student, fast-paced new programs and programs delivered entirely on line. Currently approximately 75 percent of the College’s degree-seeking students require at least one remediation course.
Ivy Tech Community College is the state’s second largest public post-secondary institution serving over 100,000 students a year. Ivy Tech has 23 campuses throughout Indiana. It serves as the state's engine of workforce development, offering affordable degree programs and training that is aligned with the needs of its community along with courses and programs that transfer to other colleges and universities in Indiana. It is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
