Gary--Ivy Tech students in Gary donated their time to help one of their own that is facing a very difficult time. Kevin O’Hara, 19, is facing more than $500,000 in future medical expenses due to primary sclerosing cholangitis, the same disease from which Chicago Bear’s star Walter Payton suffered. Kevin also needs a liver transplant.
General education instructor Debbie Alspaugh said Kevin told her about his condition after missing several of her Freshman Seminar and Basic Mathematics classes. When her Freshman Seminar class found out about his condition and his need for a liver transplant, Alspaugh said the class wanted to do something to help him. They then agreed that their community service project would be a fundraiser for Kevin.
“They decided to sell cookies since that's something that everyone should like and be able to afford,” said Alspaugh. The class devoted December 5 and 6 to sell the cookies from 9:30 am to 2:00 pm near the student lounge area. Sales were brisk and by the end of the first day, the class had sold more than 2/3 of their supply for both days – even with a donation of five dozen cookies from Strack and Van Til grocery store. Their initial goal was to raise $270 by selling the cookies two for $1. The class sold 65 dozen and raised more than $500, which also included donations from staff and faculty
