FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MARCH 20, 2006
EDUCATIONAL GRANT SPURS SIGNIFICANT GROWTH FOR IVY TECH’S PLAZAS PROGRAM
Since its inauguration in May, 2005, the Plaza Communitarias program of Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana has grown by leaps and bounds, due in large part to a generous $15,000 grant funded by the East Chicago Twin City Education Foundation.
The grant has helped to provide stipends to volunteer instructors for the English as Second Language (ESL), Adult Education, and Computer Classes. This is the first time, since the program’s inception that monetary compensation could be offered to instructors for their time and dedication to the program.
The Plazas program has grown to not only incorporate an intermediate level of ESL into the curriculum, but two additional computer classes, a typing class and an intermediate course. The adult education class, having experienced such tremendous growth, is now in need of more meeting space.
Funding from the foundation grant has also allowed the Plaza Communitarias program to host successful student workshops conducted by Centier Bank and Bank Calumet.
Plaza Communitarias coordinator Iris Sanchez says “I’m thrilled at our progress. The program is going very well and growing everyday. My goal now is to seek out more funding for the program to help it to expand and recruit more volunteers and students.”
Plaza Communitarias is an adult education program made up of three components: literacy, primary education and secondary education. Geared toward immigrants of Latin America, 15 years and older, Plaza Communitaria seeks to improve the skill level of the Spanish and English language amongst native speakers. While the program is from the Mexican Consulate, it is open to all those whose native language is Spanish.
