JANUARY 10, 2006 IVY TECH NAMES VELA TO HEAD HUMAN RESOURCES René Vela has been named the executive director of human resources for Ivy Tech Community College Northwest. As executive director, Vela will oversee the human resource needs of the four northwest campuses in Gary, Valparaiso, East Chicago and Michigan City.

Prior to joining Ivy Tech, Vela spent over 30 years in the human resources and labor (union) relations departments of Mittal Steel (formerly Ispat Inland Inc. and Inland Steel Company) in East Chicago where he handled day-to-day contract administration, grievance handling, hiring and training and college recruiting.

He has a B.A. degree in Social and Behavioral Sciences and a M.A. degree in Business Administration, both from Indiana University Northwest. Vela began his duties with Ivy Tech on December 12.
