IVY TECH HELPS SAVE COMMUNITY CENTER THOUSANDS IN LABOR AND EQUIPMENT
Ivy Tech Community College Northwest's heating, ventilation and air conditioning class from the Valparaiso campus participated in a community service project at Fendig Chapel at Christian Haven, 12501 North State Road 49 in Wheatfield from September 24 - September 26.
Bill Williams, HVAC instructor at the Valparaiso campus said the project involved 15 students removing all existing duct work, furnace and central air units and replacing them all with high efficiency units which are valued at over $2,000. The project will take about 40 hours to complete. Williams said if a contractor were doing the job, the project might run anywhere from $6,000 to $7,000. Students are using the center as an extended lab.
Mike Peterman, project coordinator, for the center, said they are "real excited about the work that Ivy Tech is doing for the facility." Christian Haven is an independent, Christian, not-for-profit agency which provides a variety of residential, day treatment, and community-based outreach services for children, youth and families who have experienced significant problems in their lives.
