IVY TECH COMMUNITY COLLEGE NORTHWEST'S MICHIGAN CITY CAMPUS SHAVES FOR A GOOD CAUSE
Ivy Tech Community College Northwest's Michigan City campus located at 3714 Franklin Street hosted a moustache "shave off" Monday, June 18th. Thanks to the successful Relay for Life LaPorte County fundraiser, sponsored by the Michigan City campus, several Ivy Tech employee moustaches were shaved away. The moustaches ranged from long and gray to thick and black to short and red. No matter what shape, color or length, there are no more hairy faces at the campus.
The Ivy Tech team for Relay For Life LaPorte County, headed by Christine Cook, executive secretary to the dean, received a challenge from Associate Professor and science Program Chair, Dr. David Merrill; Associate Director of Student Support and Development, Tony Thomas; and Business Office Assistant, Michael Ashcraft that if the team raised $1000, they would all agree to shave off their moustaches. Chancellor J. Guadalupe Valtierra "jumped on board" and offered to shave his moustache if the team was able to raise $1500.
Fundraising efforts began on May 1. After one month, the Ivy Tech team raised almost $3000. Operation "Wanted: Moustache-less" was a success.
As the men prepared to part with their hairy faces, two more of Ivy Tech "moustache finest," Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs John Schoendfelder; and culinary/hospitality Program Chair Chef Terrence Zych agreed to shave their moustaches as well. Mike Pisello, Stephanie Ream, and Shelly Yanke of All Star Cuts in Michigan City did the honors of shaving all the moustaches.
"If I can get $1500 for my moustache for American Cancer Society, maybe next time I should try EBay," said Michael Ashcraft, Business Office Assistant.
