Ivy Tech Community College Selects Gregory Scott for New Role
Former Director of Indiana’s Civil Rights Commission will lead community college’s diversity efforts.

INDIANAPOLIS--Ivy Tech Community College announced today that Gregory Kellam Scott has been selected to serve as Assistant to the President for Diversity and Community Relations. He will work closely with President Thomas J. Snyder and Ivy Tech’s 23 campus locations.

Under the direction of the President, Scott will provide the necessary planning, structure, leadership, and direction for the full execution of the college-wide diversity program. He will also assist Ivy Tech’s regional campuses and diversity councils with the development of localized diversity plans to support the overall strategic diversity plan for the College.

“I’m looking forward to joining the team at Ivy Tech Community College where I can share my knowledge and experience gained as a business consultant, judge and at the Civil Rights Commission developing practices to enhance diversity initiatives at the college,” said Scott. “In addition to assisting the college in strengthening the policies related to equity and diversity, we plan to increase community participation in student recruitment and training program courses for students in new careers and training."

Scott will also work closely with Ivy Tech’s General Counsel to recommend policy and operational changes through the adoption of proven best practices that enhance equity and diversity.

“The collective diversity among our campuses statewide is our greatest strength. Adding someone with Gregg Scott’s background to our team to lead us in this important area will be a benefit for the College and our students,” said Snyder. “Diversity enhances our ability to serve our students. It not only enriches the educational experience, but it promotes personal growth and strengthens communities and workplaces.”

Most recently, Scott served as Director of the Indiana Civil Rights Commission, a position he was appointed to in 2005 by Governor Mitch Daniels. In his first 18 months as director, he reduced the amount of time taken to investigate complaints by more than 60 percent. At Ivy Tech, Scott will assist with the investigation and resolution of employee or public complaints of disparate treatment under local, state or Federal law.

In 1993, Scott became the first African American to sit on the Colorado Supreme Court. Over the course of eight years at the Supreme Court, Scott authored well over 150 opinions addressing numerous civil and criminal law issues and resolving both federal and state law issues. During his tenure the court reviewed more than 100,000 petitions for certiorari and decided over 900 cases revolved by full written opinion. Scott himself wrote over 120 majority opinions and also wrote significant concurring and dissenting opinions.

Prior to his appointment to the Civil Rights Commission, Scott served as Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary for Gencorp, Inc. where he was a member of the senior management team from 2002-2004. As General Counsel he administered the company’s compliance with various consent decrees, as well as managed a staff of eleven attorneys and three paralegals. Prior to his position at Gencorp, Inc., he was Vice President and General Counsel for Kaiser-Hill Company, LLC.

Scott also served three years as a Trial Attorney for the US Securities and Exchange Commission in the Denver Regional Office. He also has an extensive background in higher education, serving as Chair of the Business Program and a Professor of Law for 13 years at the University of Denver, College of Law. He has also served as Assistant Dean of Resident Instruction at Rutgers University and Assistant Dean of Graduate Students and the Executive Director for the Minority Administrative Council at Trenton State College in New Jersey.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in environmental science and master’s degree in education from Rutgers University. He earned his J.D. from the Indiana University School of Law where he graduated Cum Laude.
