Selection Criteria
Students should be degree or certificate-declared and in satisfactory academic standing.
You should have plans to continue education throughout the academic year, and ideally, into the next academic year. The ideal time to join SLA is in your freshman year at Ivy Tech.
Each Region 01 campus (East Chicago, Gary, Michigan City and Valparaiso) may nominate a maximum of seven individuals for consideration as SLA participants. The Selection Committee will then identify up to five participants from each campus for enrollment in the academy. The remaining nominated individuals will be classified as alternates and may, if necessary and determined by the selection committee, be substituted as a replacement for the original participant before the end of November. Any substitutions after December 1 will be at the discretion of the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs and the SLA Advisors. A total of twenty up to (20) Academy participants from the region will be selected and trained though the Academy during the eight-month session.
Provisions must be made by each campus to permit any student to place her/his name in nomination through the campus nomination and selection process. However, each campus may utilize whatever equitable methods it believes will identify the most appropriate candidates, and assure that each candidate meets the minimum selection criteria noted above and can make the necessary commitment to take part in the entire SLA training sequence
